Heatwave Alert

5 medications that could put you at risk

Antidepressants

Common antidepressants like SSRIs and TCAs impair the body's internal thermostat, making it difficult to cool down in 30C weather.

Antipsychotics

Medications for conditions like schizophrenia and bipolar disorder can limit patient's ability to sweat, or to realise they are overheating or thirsty.

Insulin

Insulin absorbs faster in the heat, causing rapid blood sugar drops. Extreme heat can also physically degrade insulin, making it unsafe to use.

Stimulants

Medications often prescribed for ADHD can raise body temperature, impair sweating, and mask physical exhaustion.

Heart and Blood Pressure Medications

Beta-blockers: Reduce blood flow to the skin, stopping heat from escaping the body.

Diuretics: Increase urine output, accelerating dehydration and electrolyte imbalances.

Ramipril & Losartan: Disrupt fluid balance and suppress the natural urge to drink.
