There will be times when a GP needs to refer you for specialist treatment or investigations. A leaflet explaining this process is available in the surgery or can be downloaded here. Accessible versions are available here
Traditionally, referral letters to hospitals have been dictated by a doctor, typed by a secretary and sent off via email or internal mail. However, from 1st October, hospitals nationwide are initiating paper switch off, and we will need to send all referrals via the 'e-Referral System' or eRS.
We send the referral via the eRS system and produce paperwork which contains a booking reference number and password. We ask patients to collect this paperwork from reception and will make contact when it is ready. We will normally try to send text messages in the first instance, so please ensure the Surgery has your up to date mobil phone number. On receipt of the paperwork, patients can then phone a number or go online to book their own appointment at a time that is convenient to them.
In some instances, where an urgent referral is needed, your GP may be able to book you directly into the relevant hospital clinic during your appointment here at the Surgery.
Chasing a local hospital appointment, or not heard anything following a referral from your GP? Our staff have limited capacity to ring the hospital on your behalf and no shortcut past the hospital switchboard. Please make every effort to chase hospital-related queries directly with them. The Kent and Canterbury switchboard number is 01227 766877, or their outpatients appointment line is 01227 868686. Thank you.
